Wizkid always puts up 40 when he works with a female singer.
Ayra Starr is quickly becoming one of Afrobeats’ brightest stars—and here’s the kicker: she’s only 22 years old. In just a few short years, she’s made major waves with hits like “Commas” and her acclaimed project The Year I Turned 21. She also impressed with her recent heartfelt single “All The Love.” Now, she’s back, linking once again with Wizkid for a brand-new track, “Gimme Dat.” If you recall, the duo previously connected on “2 Sugar” from Wizkid’s More Love, Less Ego album.
In “Gimme Dat,” Ayra Starr and Wizkid trade smooth verses about craving love and affection from their partners. Wizkid, especially, sounds sprung—punctuating his lines with several goddamns to show how impressed he is. The track rides an uptempo, funky Afrobeats beat that is guaranteed to get you moving, while still carrying an undeniable sensual undertone.
Ayra Starr delivers a show-stopping vocal performance, blending invigorating melodies with hypnotic singing that leaves a lasting impression. She even pays homage to Wyclef Jean by weaving elements of his iconic “911” beat into the production and referencing “Diallo” from The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II A Book.
Clothes need to come off when “Gimme Dat” comes on.
